Siddhartha

“He had started to suspect that his venerable father and his other teachers, that the wise Brahmans had already revealed to him the most and best of their wisdom, that they had already filled his expecting vessel with their richness, and the vessel was not full, the spirit was not content, the soul was not calm, the heart was not satisfied. The ablutions were good, but they were water, they did not wash off the sin, they did not heal the spirit's thirst, they did not relieve the fear in his heart. ”

Siddhartha finds that in order to understand life it couldn’t be achieved from the teachings of his father or other teachers. He found that what he was taught did not satisfy his spirit, he was always searching for spiritual enlightenment through organized religion. However, he found they all fail to give him adequate knowledge, wisdom and understanding. In order to satisfy his heart he needed to look within, he needed to seek the internal spirits rather than external guidance from others. This passage is important to me because its like the bible says one should “study to show yourself approved”. Everyone needs to find their own path to be closer to God, by studying the word and not being indoctrinated by others; you are more likely to find the truth. It’s like Siddhartha all that they had thought him did not quench his spirit’s thirst; he needed to find solace from within.

  1. I agree with you completly on this, not only do you need to create your own path to be closer to God, but to be closer to yourself. Following or coping others might make it easier for one to believe they have found the path but in really does not allow you to find your own path and your own beliefs.
